This is a follow up to several posts on worship, but specifically this post: WORSHIP. So you might want to check that out first if you haven’t already.

I’ve heard people talk about some of Satan’s greatest strategies and victories…. victories such as getting believers to bicker and argue amongst themselves so that they are not only of no value to the kingdom, but actually hinder the kingdom. I’ve heard it said that when the devil wants to take a believer out of the game, he just keeps them busy with things that don’t impact the kingdom. And I’m sure there are many other effective strategies. But I believe I’ve stumbled upon Satan’s Greatest victory over the church. And it’s that he’s been able to get evangelical Christians as a whole to create a whole new definition of worship, one which is not related to the type of worship we see in the Scriptures. He’s duped millions of Christians into thinking they are worshiping God when they are far from it.

You see, I’ve heard it many times before, and even said it, taught it, and believed it myself, that we worship God with our lives, constantly. Well, the only way this is true is if we create our own modernized definition of worship. And that’s exactly what we’ve done. To evangelicals, worship has become this ambiguous idea of thinking positively about God. We can now worship God when we brush our teeth, when we drive our car, when we mow our lawn, just by thinking some warm fuzzy feelings about God. At least that’s what we are taught today. However, this idea of “worship” is not from the Scriptures. It’s something we made up. It’s a nice concept, and is probably more positive than negative, in and of itself. But the problem is that this idea of “worship” has virtually taken the place of Biblical worship. Here’s a few examples of the type of worship we see in the Scriptures.

When God told Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, Abram said this to his servants in Gen 22:5,
He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

After Moses chiseled the the 2nd set of stone tablets, Exodus 34:8 says,
Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped.

2 Chronicles 7:3
When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the LORD, saying, “He is good; his love endures forever.”

Here’s what happened when the magi visited Jesus, in Matthew 2:11
On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

There are plenty more examples to check out if you want to on your own. The worship in the Scriptures sounds very different from what we’ve turned “worship” into today doesn’t it? So, over the years, Satan has gotten us to slowly turn our backs on real worship, and change it into something that makes us feel good and cannot be identified so nobody can tell us that we are not worshiping. Satan wins big here.
