Just some random notes on the Beijing Olympics.

Adam Nelson was one of the favorites to win Gold for the US in the shotput. Instead he fouls on all 3 of his attempts and never even gets the metal ball into the grass for a measurement. What a disappointment that must be. It’s like the whole trip was a waste of time.

I found Michael Phelps on Facebook, and joined his fan club. He currently has about 1.2 Million fans registered. I posted a question on his wall, and I’m sure he’ll get back to me soon. Then I proposed to him. I believe he only has about 42,000 proposals in line before me. He’s from Baltimore, and the city of Baltimore is now trying to decide what to do with him when he gets home. They’ve really screwed up. 4 years ago, when he won 6 Gold medals, they threw a parade for him and presented him with the Key to the city. Now after winning 8, what could they possibly do to top that? They gave out everything they had to offer on the 1st date, and now what can they do to impress him for the 2nd date? I’m sure some guys have felt like this after giving a girl a dozen roses on the 1st date. That doesn’t really leave you in a good spot for the 2nd date. Anything less will be a letdown. Maybe they can give him free donuts for life or something like that.

I saw some video of Mark Spitz when he won one of his gold medals the other night. The sport has changed a lot since then. He touches the wall and comes out of the water with his hair flowing long and wet. They did not wear swim caps back then. I guess those are a new invention. Just think how much that hair he had slowed him down. And he also had a big bushy mustache. No wonder Phelps beat his WR in the 200m Freestyle by 9 seconds. That’s a long time.

The Steeplechase is another one of those events that makes you wonder where it came from. They run around the track and at one end they jump up on a high beam and land in a puddle of water. I guess they want to see who can run the fastest with wet shoes.

I watched the women’s 10K one night. The lady that won the Gold ran it in 29 minutes and change. That beat a lot of my 5K times that I used to run. So if I ran a lap around the track once, she would have run 2. That’s kind of humbling.

When Usain Bolt demolished the field in the 100m sprint, they estimated he hit about 30 mph at his top speed. That’s unbelievable. Most people have never even reached 30 mph on a bicycle! going downhill!  Also, I just became a friend of Usain on Facebook.  So if any of you have anything you’d like me to ask him, I seem to have the inside track.  We are pretty tight.

We were watching the 100m hurdles last night. I said to my 5 year old, “Look, they are jumping those hurdles.” He replied, “Turtles? Why are the jumping Turtles?” I said, “To get to the other side.”
