We use phrases all the time that we are so used to hearing. But when you change the phrase just a little, but still say the same thing, it sounds very strange. For example, when somebody says it’s “raining cats and dogs”, we know what they mean. But if you flip it, and somebody says its “raining dogs and cats”, you look at them very strange like they said something wrong. I used to have a coworker that had learned English as a 2nd language, and he would do this unintentionally all the time. He would use the “raining dogs and cats” phrase. Another thing he would say was, “I didn’t hear everything. I only heard pieces and bits.” I was like, “Huh?” Or how about making a jelly and peanut butter sandwich. Doesn’t sound near as good as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Or have you ever heard of Robin and Batman?
